Language (A Rose By Any Other Name)

This might be a typical note from a wife to a husband that would make perfect sense to anyone in Britain. The American translation will follow. ..... An English Honey Do list...... Honey, We need a few things for the do this weekend.. Would you go to the shop and get a silverside, courgettes, cos, aubergine, mangetout, cling film, greaseproof paper,. ice lollys and some hundreds and thousands . Fill up the trolley with whatever else you want. Watch for the lollipop lady at the zebra crossing. I saw on the telly that an articulated lorry hit a verge and blew a remould at the ring road and was blocking the central reservation. I drove past a worker on a loudhailer down by the marshalling yard this morning at half nine warning everyone to be careful because there are loose sleepers under the bridge so maybe you should take the metalled road instead. If you get stuck in traffic keep the kids busy with patience, noughts and crosses or draughts and ring me on the mobile. I can always pop over in the saloon and get takeaway We can heat it back up on the hob.. Oh and Mr. Bloggs across the street said you should knock him up. He wants to loan us his old pram and he has lucky dips for the tykes in his boot. He is still looking for a sleeping partner for his new scheme when he gets enough gearing. He has some dosh lined up already so you might not want to be a slowcoach. Don’t forget to tell Joe thanks for the pram BTW. Have you seen the dummy. The last time I saw it was near the powerpoint in the loo. Oh and one last dicky bird, Check under the bonnet if you have time . We may need a new silencer Put on your boiler suit first though I know how shambolic you can be Anyroad, I can't wait to canoodlle later. Xxxxx

Welcome!

When my unusual last name, Haptonstall, lead me to the discovery of a 12th century village in Yorkshire, England named Heptonstall I decided to take a trip there. I used the area as kind of a hub always returning after visting other spots in Britain and soon the place started feeling like a second home. The following summer I spent 3 1/2 months in the UK and I’m planning another long trip for the summer of 2015. Going to the UK is one of the best decision I’ve ever made Not only is it a beautiful place but I’ve made alot of good friends there. This blog isn’t for them though, it’s for Americans visiting or moving to Britain with no idea of what to expect other than what’s in the typical travel guide. I will talk about places to go, things to do and that sort of thing but also about the people, the language the culture, political trends and anything else English which is why I’m calling this blog The Heart of Britain.
